New salary thresholds for 2026

At the beginning of each year, the Government updates two essential labour indicators: the minimum wage and the average monthly global salary. These amounts, published in the BOPA, impact employee payslips, business costs and self-employed contributions.

This article summarises the official 2025 figures and their practical implications.

Minimum wage 2026

Decree 8/2026, dated 14 January 2026, sets the minimum hourly wage at €8.88 per hour, following a 5.4% increase applicable from 1 January, twice the CPI, which was estimated at 2.7%.

  • Hourly minimum wage: €8.80
  • Monthly minimum wage (40 h/week): €1,523.33

🔹Why is the minimum wage relevant?

Because it:

  • Sets the legal minimum remuneration.
  • Determines proportional pay for part-time work.
  • Guides labour inspections, sanctions and disputes.
  • Is required for immigration permits depending on salary thresholds.
  • Is used in social programmes linked to the minimum wage.

Average salary applicable in 2026 (2025 value)

Decree 16/2025, dated 29-1-2025, fixes the 2024 average monthly global salary at €2,560.99, which becomes the reference for all 2025 contribution rules. As soon as the 2026 figure is published, we will notify it.

🔹Why is the average salary important?

Especially for the self-employed:

  • Minimum contribution base: 100% of the average salary.
  • Used for economic and statistical studies.
  • Helps assess the remuneration of company directors who must register with CASS.
  • Informs public policy and labour-market analysis.
